Rodney Ram and I arrived in Guangzhou this afternoon and immediately went to beautiful Yuexiu Park to search for Rodney’s famous cousins, The Five Rams of Guangzhou!

First we looked near the pedal boats…but they weren’t there…

Then we listened to some wonderful Chinese opera singers…and met a lovely dancer…but the Five Rams weren’t there either…

What a BOLD ram with rice in his mouth!

Then, suddenly, at the top of a l-o-n-g  hill, we saw a fierce looking face with rice in its mouth!

The Magnificent Five Rams of Guangzhou!

And then a ram with some adoring sheep around him!

What a fun day I just had with the keen readers and writers of Grades 3 to 6 at Kincoppal Rose Bay in Sydney! We started with a fun reading of my latest book, The Tale of Rodney Ram, then had three fabulous workshops where we talked about How to Write a Riveting Story. After the sessions, some of the classes immediately got started on story plans for my Clever Competition – and I can’t wait to read the results! Warm thanks to librarian Helen Webster (above) for being such a kind and supportive host.

Harry, Sarah and The Tale of Rodney Ram

Harry Harrison and I are jumping for joy – and so is Rodney Ram! The Tale of Rodney Ram has just been nominated for the Golden Dragon Book Awards 2016, alongside five other very impressive contenders in the Younger Readers (8 to 11) category!!

Take at look at http://www.hkgoldendragonawards.org/younger-readers-8—11.html.

The nominations are made by school librarians…but the voting is done by the kids! Voting doesn’t open till March next year, but in the meantime if you love our woolly hero and his shaggy story you might like to give him a review on Goodreads so other readers can find out what you think!

Rodney Ram’s Literary Tour of Paris!

As we all know, Rodney Ram is a very artistic sheep who loves writing rustic airs, especially when he’s wearing those dainty flowers. So, being on holiday in Paris with my family as I – and my toy sheep – have been this Easter, what could be more natural than to take my sheep on a literary tour on the Left Bank in Paris?

Paris between the wars (@ 1919 to 1939) saw the flowering of many great artists and writers (especially American writers), who congregated there to live in small, damp rooms where they wrote their stories, and to spend their evenings in warm cafes and bars where they met all manner of European writers, artists and musicians, as well as each other, of course! It was here that Sylvia Beach founded Shakespeare and Company, the first English language bookshop and lending library in Paris, which became a home away from home for her American writer friends. So Rodney Ram and I, and my very forbearing husband and girls, set out yesterday to track down some of their haunts. This is where we went!

(1) ERNEST HEMINGWAY – No. 74, Rue du Cardinal Lemoine – where the great American writer wrote his first famous novels. We found the address, and rang on the door, but nobody opened. So then Rodney decided to wait on the door handle, then on the window sill. We even looked way up to the 3rd floor to see if Hemingway was in…but no one was home 😦 …so we moved on!

(2) JAMES JOYCE – No. 71 Rue de Cardinal Lemoine – the great Irish writer was a close neighbour of the Hemingways for three months whilst finishing his masterpiece Ulysses, before he became rich and lived in more fancy neighbourhoods! We rang the bell…and waited and waited…but nobody came so we moved on again!

(3) GERTRUDE STEIN – No. 27 Rue de Fleurus – another great American writer, who lived in Paris between the wars and there wrote her books and held wonderful literary salons for the writers and artists of the time. How I wish I could have been there (Rodney thinks the same thing :)! ) We rang the bell, and waited – but she must have been out! So we moved on…

Gertrude Stein #3 Gertrude Stein #2 Gertrude Stein #1

(4) WILLIAM FAULKNER – No. 26 Rue Servandoni – William Faulkner was another giant of American literature, who lived briefly in Paris in 1925 and often saw James Joyce sitting in cafes near the Jardin du Luxembourg, but never mustered up the courage to speak to him! Here my shaggy sheep and I pay tribute to the author of “The Sound and the Fury” and other wonderful stories.

But alas, not even Faulkner was home…so after an hour spent sitting under the blossom trees in Jardin du Luxembourg, we high-tailed it down to the Eiffel Tower, before sailing down the Seine for dinner on a Bateau Mouche! Farewell, beautiful Paris in the Springtime! Au revoir and a bientot!

Asia Society event #1

A big thank you to Asia Society Hong Kong’s Executive Director Alice Mong (second to my right) and Head of Programs (Arts and Culture) Winsome Tam (first to my right) for hosting a fabulous story reading event at Asia Society yesterday in conjunction with RoomtoRead, for me and my shy Rodney Ram! We had a fun, interactive story reading with a whole lot of kids, mums and dads, together with a tricky quiz for young and old with mini-panda prizes, some gorgeous colouring-in sheets by Harry Harrison to keep the kids busy before and afterwards, and wonderful speeches from Alice and the lovely Helen Van der Zalm from RoomtoRead (third to my right). It was a great honour to do an event at such a great Hong Kong institution, while representing such an exceptional children’s charity. Don’t forget to visit their websites at:

http://asiasociety.org/hong-kong/events/upcoming – for must-do cultural events in Hong Kong for the whole family and

http://www.roomtoread.org – to see how you and your family can help make the world a better, safer place for everyone by promoting children’s literacy.

On Wednesday I attended a fantastic evening with Room To Read, where I heard the moving story of a wonderful young woman called Tay Thi Nguyen, who is the star graduate of Room to Read Vietnam’s Girls’ Education Program. Can you believe that when Tay Thi was a young girl, her mum actually burned her school books to stop her from getting an education? It was because the family was so poor, her mum wanted Tay Thi to go out and work to earn money. Luckily Room To Read found out about her, and was able to help her to get a scholarship to fund all her studies, until she graduated at university as a teacher! Now her mum is very happy, because not only can Tay Thi earn a great living, but she has also encouraged both her brothers to go on to further studies, so the family will no longer be poor! Tay Thi has now gone back to her village to teach other children to read – isn’t she an inspiration?

Here she is above on the left, holding a copy of my Tale of Rodney Ram with Dan Doan, Senior Program Manager, Room to Read Vietnam’s Girls’ Education Program, at Room to Read’s Gala Event on Friday night. I’m so proud to see two such kind and wonderful people holding my books!

Remember if you want to help girls like Tay Thi achieve their dream to read, and to study, you can ask Mum and Dad to visit http://www.roomtoread.org right away with you, to find out more!

I had SUCH a fun day today with my old – and young 🙂 – friends at Discovery Bay International School today! The Grade 2s, 3s, and 4s met my shaggy, shy sheep Rodney, and then the gorgeous Grade 1s met my very vain (but loveable) Pin Yin Panda, and learned all about how the animals got into the Chinese Zodiac! We had a ball! Huge thanks to the wonderful Naomi Gist (above) for hosting me today! And even more thanks for letting me, and my family of Chinese Zodiac animals, make our getaway, very stylishly, in her Discovery Bay golf buggy! But trust that Pin Yin Panda to insist on riding in the front! You can also see below a fabulous drawing of Rodney Ram given to me by a lovely student called Elin – isn’t it terrific?
