Well, I’ve almost finished judging The Rascally Rat Tale Competition, and will be posting the results very soon! In the meantime, you can all enjoy this poem from Parker Shapiro, Grade 2, Stamford American School Hong Kong, who took part in my virtual Introduction to Poetry Workshop back in April, and wrote the best poem in the challenge I set his class to complete afterwards. The kids had to complete the poem in perfect rhyme and rhythm in the underlined sections- I think he did a great job, don’t you? And I know we’ll ALL agree with the spell he casts at the end of the poem!
The Magical School Brew
By Parker Shapiro, Grade 2, Stamford American School Hong Kong
Throw into the magic pot
Teachers, admin – all the lot!
Throw your pen into the brew
Throw in all your backpacks too!
Add a dash of markers, red
And teach me to draw instead!
Throw into the magic pot
Teachers, admin – all the lot!
Stir into the steaming soup
Mash it up with some green goop
Don’t forget to add some glue
And the goop gets smelly, ew
Throw into the magic pot
Teachers, admin – all the lot!
While you stir, recite this spell:
Magic,magic, ring a bell
Send the virus to the moon
Let us see our friends at noon
Throw into the magic pot
Teachers, admin – all the lot!

Warm thanks to Paul Conway and the English department team at CAC Tuen Mun for inviting me to a fun, fabulous day of story readings and a poetry workshop today! It was English Week, and it was wonderful to meet such a big bunch of enthusiastic local students, who listened so well to three of my Chinese Calendar Tales, and taught me some Chinese as well! I hope to see you all again some day!

A big HELLOOOO to my old friends, the kids and teachers of Discovery Bay International School, where I spent a very happy day on Friday! The Year 5s and 6s unscrambled limericks, identified haikus, invented acrostics and rhymed tricky words in my Introduction to Poetry workshop; the Year 1s and 2s learnt all about what it’s like to be an author, and the Year 3s and 4s heard my Tale of Ming Kee Monkey! It was great to be with you all again! Warm thanks to Naomi Gist, DBIS Library Co-ordinator, my fantastic host for the day!

On Tuesday this week I had great fun with the fabulous Year 4 students of P0 Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau School at Piper’s Point, in three Introduction to Poetry Workshops! We learned all about rhythm and rhyme, and lots of different types of poetry including acrostics, haikus, rhyming verse and limericks! Many thanks to my lovely host Joli Moore!

A big thank you to the friendly, enthusiastic, book-loving staff and students of Avondale Grammar in Singapore for hosting me yesterday! We had a fabulous day of story readings with the Foundation to Year 2 students, who met Chester Choi and Pin Yin Panda, then my Introduction to Poetry Workshop with the Year 3 and 4s, and my Books are a Brain’s Best Friend with the Year 5 to 8s! We even had time for a quick reading of A Dirty Story to the Year 5 to 8s, who very accurately predicted the rhyming words to each couplet! I saw books everywhere, the teachers were huge fans of book-reading, and the students were clearly HUGE book-readers, with, predictably, impressive general knowledge and very interesting questions and opinions to offer. Now that’s what I call an education! I look forward to some great entries in my Clever Competition!
A BIG day at Kowloon Junior School!

Well that was a whopper of a day today at Kowloon Junior School! It was great to visit my old friends there again, and to see the impressive new school premises, with a big, beautiful library right at the heart of the school, just where a library should be! The Grade 3s had my How to Write a Riveting Story Workshop, I read my Tale of Rodney Ram to the Grade 1s, 2s, 4s and 5s, and then the Grade 6s had my Introduction to Poetry Workshop. It was fun, and the kids were fabulous! Here they are above, getting ready for one of my sessions with a big “AIYEEE-YA!” on the right, and above left are my two lovely hosts for the day, Katie Tucker (Drama Club and K2 Teacher) and Vanessa Sheppard (teacher librarian). I can’t wait to see all the kids’ entries in my Clever Competition! See the Clever Competition tab above for all the details!
