Mwahaha! Halloween is coming fast, and all the fun of trick or treating, pumpkin lanterns, cobwebs, spiders, ghosts, witches, haunted houses, sweet treats and scary costumes for kids, and, of course, dental bills for Mum and Dad! It’s been five long years since our last Halloween writing competition – so I think it’s high time for another one! You can write any kind of poem, provided it’s about Halloween! I’ll be looking for fantastic vocabulary, original ideas, lots of detailed descriptions and that special CHILL FACTOR to make the hairs rise on the back of my neck! Hello everyone! I’m back home again in Hong Kong, and just starting to judge my Shaggy Sheep Poem Competition, with my dog Bobby snuggled at my feet! Today I’ve collated all the entries and GEE WHIZZIKINS it’s a biggie! 174 fabulous entries from kids in 32 different schools in Beijing, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, Sydney, Taiwan and even Seattle in the USA! So have patience, my friends! It’s going to take me a little while to read them all and decide on the ten best entries in each category. It’ll be hard work, but great fun too! I just love reading all your poems, and so does my dog Bobby too! So thanks a million for sending them all in!

A very Happy Easter to you, wherever you are! Now Easter was a time of rebirth, when Jesus was resurrected from the dead. And it’s also a time for all things new, because, of course, it’s Spring (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere :))! The trees are blossoming, the daffodils are nodding their golden heads, and everywhere there is new life: baby birds, fluffy golden chicks, new kittens and puppies, colts and calves, and lots of lambs gambolling in the meadows…. speaking of which…

A very Happy Year of the Ram (or Sheep or Goat) to you! It’s time for my next competition – and this time, of course, it’s all about sheep! I want you to write me a fun poem all about a single sheep, or a flock of sheep, or a ram, or a goat – in fact any woolly animal that runs around in a paddock and says “baaaa”! It can be any sort of poem – rhyming verse, or an acrostic, or a haiku, or a limerick, or even a knock knock joke! You can even write some weally woolly free verse! I’ll be looking for excellent vocabulary, great ideas, good spelling, and above all, something to make me smile! So this time it’s a fun one and I wish you lots of fun writing it! This morning it was my great pleasure to visit Discovery College Primary Assembly to congratulate the winners in the Grade 4 to 6 Category of my Super Silk Road Story writing competition! It was terrific to meet the place winners in person in the assembly, then to speak for a few minutes to all the Grade 5s about their stories. Well done all of you!

It’s the Year of the Horse, so what better way to gallop off to a great start than to enter my new Clever Competition for primary school students! And of course, the topic is HORSES!
