What a week it’s been! I’ve had a fantastic time working with 16 very dedicated writers in the second week of my Summer Writing Classes in Wanchai; 8 kids in the morning (at left, above) and 8 more in the afternoon (at right, above)! It’s been a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun too! Tomorrow is the best day of all, when everyone gets to hear the stories that their new friends have written – I can’t wait!

Congratulations to the students in my Summer Writing Class 8-12 August!

whole class with certificates

Huge congratulations to the 8 hard-working, enthusiastic students in my first Summer Writing Class last week! At the end of an intensive week of story-planning and drafting, they each produced a highly entertaining tale, with all the ingredients of a great story! With close attention to their characters and setting, attention-grabbing beginnings and thought-provoking endings, as well as a strong story line which followed the correct curve, they wrote stories of which they can truly be proud! I was especially happy to discover yesterday that they’d even worked on their stories at home! They leave the class with a Certificate of Completion, a folder of their work, and a story-planning guide for the future, as well as a list of tips to help them on their journey to becoming great writers. Well done all of you!

Say hello to two lovely friends – one old and one new – I met at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2016 in Singapore’s magnificent National Library this week! To the right is Denise Tan, owner of Closetful of Books which distributes my Chinese Calendar Tales and Dirty Stories to schools in Singapore and which was official bookseller at the Festival for the second year; to the left is the famous Cynthia Leitich Smith, New York Times best-selling author of over a dozen books for kids and young adults! It was a great privilege to hear her speak about writing for young adults; she’s a very funny lady! I had a fantastic time at the Festival hearing remarkable speakers and meeting writers and illustrators from all around the world – especially Asia! Best of all was that every single person I met loves BOOKS!

Hello Singapore – and thank you CIS Lakeside!

It’s fabulous to be back in Singapore! Yesterday I had a wonderful day with the Grade 4s, 5s and 6s at beautiful big Canadian International School Lakeside, where I introduced the kids to my Chinese Calendar Tales, and especially to my mischievous Ming Kee Monkey and my dashing Dark Horse! We finished the day with the Grade 4s learning all about How to Write a Riveting Story! I look forward to all your entries in my next Clever Competition! Huge thanks to the lovely Lisa Miller, Head of Senior Library, for being such a kind and welcoming host!

No sooner that I was back from Bologna, than I was on a plane to Shanghai, to attend the Awards Ceremony on Saturday in the Little Star Writing Competition for over 500 kids in Beijing and Shanghai schools! As the final judge, I was there to officiate at the Awards Ceremony hosted by Yew Chung International School’s Gubei campus, and to talk to the exceptional writers who won First Place in each of the four age categories. We even fitted in time for a story reading of my latest Chinese Calendar Tale for the kids, mums and dads, and a Writing Workshop for everybody at the end! Many thanks to Little Star Magazine, YCIS and the fabulous kids and parents who gave me such a warm welcome. And huge congratulations to all the talented finalists!

Today I was so happy to visit my friends at Shatin Junior School again for my How to Write a Riveting Story Workshop with the wonderful Year 4s! But I’m also very sad to be finishing my three day visit too! You can cheer me up again by entering my Clever Competition (see tab above), and if the Year 4s use that Story Planning Sheet to plan their stories, I’m sure they’re going to be fantastic! And thanks for the lovely book orders! You’ll have them all by next week!

With Yr 3 & 4

A big HELLOOOO to my old friends, the kids and teachers of Discovery Bay International School, where I spent a very happy day on Friday! The Year 5s and 6s unscrambled limericks, identified haikus, invented acrostics and rhymed tricky words in my Introduction to Poetry workshop; the Year 1s and 2s learnt all about what it’s like to be an author, and the Year 3s and 4s heard my Tale of Ming Kee Monkey! It was great to be with you all again! Warm thanks to Naomi Gist, DBIS Library Co-ordinator, my fantastic host for the day!

Many thanks to the Fabulous Five Year 5 teachers at Shatin Junior for having me again today, to talk to their business-minded students about the ins and outs of publishing your own book, from Brilliant Idea to Final Product! I look forward to seeing all your creations on the bookshelves of bookstores in Hong Kong in the years to come! See you all again next Tuesday!
