A Room without Books is like a Body without a Soul

Those are the words of the great Roman philosopher Cicero, writing over two thouand years ago. And how right he is. In the same way that our bodies are what we eat, our minds, hearts and souls are what we read. So if we don’t read books – lots and lots of books – we are starving our minds, bodies and souls.

There are so many wonderful quotes out there about reading, and books,  which inspire me every day. So I’ve decided to share them with you on  a brand new page called My Favourite Sayings. Just click on the new tab at the top of this page to have a read. And if you know any wonderful quotes about books or reading, or short poems that inspire you, why don’t you share them with us by posting a comment on my new page?

  1. Great Idea!

  2. What is a book?

This is a quote form Carl Sagan on his website.

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”

What do books mean to you? Please comment.

  3. Dear Hillary – what a wonderful quote, and I’m so impressed you found it! It’s a great thing when a primary school student is aware of a scientist, writer and philosopher such as Carl Sagan! I hope you don’t mind if I cut and paste it straight to my new Page!

What do books mean to me? Books mean everything to me. Like eyes, they are mirrors of the soul. They are the portals to the writer’s heart and mind and all that is unique about them. They transport, provoke and entertain. And whilst doing so they feed our own hearts, minds and souls. In the same way that our bodies are what we eat, our hearts and minds and souls are what we read.

Thank you Hillary for writing. Keep up your fantastic reading and writing, and you will become a writer worth the reading.
