Now I know that I do bang on about not using toilet humour in your stories for my Clever Competitions…but I can’t resist sending you this fabulous Chinese New Year greeting from Harry Harrison, beloved illustrator of the Chinese Calendar Tales and the Dirty Stories! This afternoon I had a wonderful chat with Noreen Mir at RTHK Radio 3 on the 1 2 3 Show all about my new book The Tale of Desmond Dog, the amazing history of Hong Kong and notorious pirate queen Ching Shih behind it, and, of course, the official launch of Harry Harrison’s and my book at Bookazine, 3rd floor, Princes Building, tomorrow at 2pm! You can listen to it here !

A big Cockadoodle Doo from Rickshaw Rooster, and huge thanks from me and Harry Harrison, to all our lovely fans who attended the Hong Kong launch of our latest Chinese Calendar Tale, The Tale of Rickshaw Rooster, on Saturday! There were over 30 kids, plus their lovely mums and dads, and we all had a lot of fun crowing our heads off, as well as supporting the national teams in that Race along the Bund in the story! Many thanks to Arti and Shonee Mirchandani, Clemence and all the team at Bookazine for another funny and fabulous Book Launch, as well as for these terrific photos!

They’re in shop windows, arcades and doorways all over Hong Kong – they’re even on high heels! What a great celebration for the Year of the Rooster! And my Rickshaw Rooster, being very vain of course, thinks he’s the cock-a-doodliest of them all!

Rickshaw Rooster is off and running in Hong Kong Schools! On Tuesday 17th January, he made a funny and fabulous visit to Kennedy School in Pok Fu Lam, where he met 900 primary school kids and their teachers!! Many thanks to Jeff Moore, Head of English, for being such a great host!
And today he raced into my nearest neighbours here in Tai Po at the wonderful Japanese International School, where we met all the Grade 3s to Grade 6s, with a fun story, much cockadoodling, and lots of luscious Chinese history thrown in! We had SO much fun! Thank you my dear friends Cath Wan and Cong Capati-Contreras, from the Library, for being my very warm and welcoming hosts!

Two fabulous days at Dominic College, Hobart

A big thank you to fabulous librarian Christine Donnelly (above left) and her lovely assistant Cath (above right) for hosting me for two days at Dominic College in Glenorchy, Hobart! Cath prepared some wonderful displays – thank you Cath! – and Christine was one of the warmest, most gracious hosts I have ever had the pleasure of working with! Thank you for a truly memorable visit!
DAY ONE: The delicious Preps and Year Ones met my hungry, lonely dragon in The Tale of Chester Choi; the Year 3s and 4s met my vain but loveable Pin Yin Panda, and I got to see the most fantastic artwork from all the year groups, who have spent weeks learning all about the Chinese Zodiac! It was such fun to see all the wonderful illustrations of characters from my books, as well as beautiful red fans and other Chinese New Year decorations: what a great way to learn all about China’s fascinating history, folklore and culture! Here are just some of the great artworks I saw:
DAY TWO: I met the Year 2s, 5s and 6s, who heard my Tale of Pin Yin Panda and The Tale of Ming Kee Monkey, and then spent a memorable hour with the Year 9/10 Creative Writing Class, giving them some inside information about How to Publish a Picture Book from Brilliant Idea to Final Product! Today Ming Kee Monkey and I made a special visit to The Hobart Bookshop at Tasmania’s famous Salamanca Place for a book-signing, a story reading, and a chance to meet some new fans and to introduce them to my books about the Chinese Zodiac animals! Many thanks to Janet Grecian for hosting the event! I look forward to meeting more of my Hobart fans at some fabulous primary schools this week!
