My Favourite Sayings

23 March 2013: Here is a quote I just received from Hillary Lo, an exceptional student from Shatin Junior School who is a regular entrant in my Clever Competitions for writing. It’s from the extraordinary astrophysicist, cosmologist, writer and philosopher Carl Sagan – find out more about him at http://www.carlsagan.com/:

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”

Thank you Hillary! And if you also have a fantastic quote about books or writing, please share it with us all by posting a comment on this page!

Every so often I read something which makes me go “Aha! That’s EXACTLY what I think about books/reading too!” And sometimes I think “Oh YES! That’s a PERFECT poem! “. So here’s a brand new page, devoted to those lovely quotations and short poems which inspire me, and which I hope will inspire you. If you have any special quotes or poems which you’d like to share with me and my blog visitors, why don’t you post them below! Remember – the only limitation is that they have to be about books and reading… and I have to approve of them first before I post them!

Before we start, a big thank you to my beautiful teenage daughter Beatrice who suggested, and is helping me to fill, this page.

This is  a poem by the author who first inspired me to start writing at the age of 6, because his stories first showed me that writing is playing with words. It’s all about the wonder of being YOU, and being different to everybody else!

You are You by Dr Seuss

You are You by Dr Seuss

Here’s a perfect poem about flowers, in a single thought!
india flowers laughing

Here’s one for mums and dads from one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived:

Einstein

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”
Albert Einstein

And finally the great Roman philosopher and writer Cicero said all that needs to be said over two thousand years ago:

room without books

So…turn off the computer NOW and fetch yourself a fabulous book! And ask Mum and Dad to fill your room with books, books and more books! Then go ahead – read, fill up and LIVE!

  6. The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.
    -Saint Augustine
    From: Cherise Leung

    • Lovely one Cherise – thanks for sharing! The interesting thing is that even if you can never travel yourself, reading books about faraway places will take you there! So we could also say “The Book is a World, and those who do not read travel only where their own feet can take them!”

  7. I think of life as a good book. The further you get into it, the more it begins to make sense.
    –Harold Kushner

    • As a VERY OLD PERSON I completely agree with this one – thank you Cherise!

  8. If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.

    –Haruki Murakami

    • I absolutely agree with Haruki – in the same way that our bodies are what we eat, our minds are what we put into them – especially when reading books!

  9. If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.
    -JustSomeRandomPerson

    • This is absolutely right! We are what we put into our brains – and we can only get out of our brains what we put into them! So if you want to think original thoughts, you need to read lots and lots of books, and especially books that your friends AREN’T reading!

  10. “We read to know that we are not alone.”
    ― William Nicholson

“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
― Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.”
― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
― Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.”
― William Styron, Conversations with William Styron

“When you read a great book, you don’t escape from life, you plunge deeper into it. There may be a superficial escape – into different countries, mores, speech patterns – but what you are essentially doing is furthering your understanding of life’s subtleties, paradoxes, joys, pains and truths. Reading and life are not separate but symbiotic.”
― Julian Barnes, A Life with Books

    • What wonderful quotes these are – thank you so much Hillary for sending them! I agree with them all, especially the last one by Julian Barnes. This is why reading books is so important to us as human beings. And you can’t get this from the internet…ever. So everybody reading this – quick! Turn off your computer and go and dive into a great book right now!
