My Favourite Sayings
23 March 2013: Here is a quote I just received from Hillary Lo, an exceptional student from Shatin Junior School who is a regular entrant in my Clever Competitions for writing. It’s from the extraordinary astrophysicist, cosmologist, writer and philosopher Carl Sagan – find out more about him at http://www.carlsagan.com/:
“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”
Thank you Hillary! And if you also have a fantastic quote about books or writing, please share it with us all by posting a comment on this page!
Every so often I read something which makes me go “Aha! That’s EXACTLY what I think about books/reading too!” And sometimes I think “Oh YES! That’s a PERFECT poem! “. So here’s a brand new page, devoted to those lovely quotations and short poems which inspire me, and which I hope will inspire you. If you have any special quotes or poems which you’d like to share with me and my blog visitors, why don’t you post them below! Remember – the only limitation is that they have to be about books and reading… and I have to approve of them first before I post them!
Before we start, a big thank you to my beautiful teenage daughter Beatrice who suggested, and is helping me to fill, this page.
This is a poem by the author who first inspired me to start writing at the age of 6, because his stories first showed me that writing is playing with words. It’s all about the wonder of being YOU, and being different to everybody else!
Here’s one for mums and dads from one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived:
And finally the great Roman philosopher and writer Cicero said all that needs to be said over two thousand years ago:
So…turn off the computer NOW and fetch yourself a fabulous book! And ask Mum and Dad to fill your room with books, books and more books! Then go ahead – read, fill up and LIVE!
